Members of the forensic team finished out the last two months of their regular season with a great degree of success. Award winners for the last set of scheduled tournaments included: Adam Mahood who competed in extemporaneous speaking and placed 3rd at North Allegheny, 2nd at Mercer and 4th at Bethel Park; Matt Harvey who competed in humorous interpretation and placed 3rd at Pine Richland and 13th at Bethel Park; Jess Hartman who competed in prose reading and placed 3rd at Mercer and 3rd at Bethel Park.

In student congress competition, Adam Mahood and Vincent Lamperski received national nominations in the senate and in the house, respectively.

North Catholic then sent five contestants to Erie to the Mercyhurst/McDowell invitational. Students competing there included Vincent Lamperski and Miranda Yoho, making their debut in Public Forum debate, Hillary Cerra and Bridget Hanna competing in poetry, and Greg Lenns competing in student congress.

NC took 11 students to the Pine Richland tournament as speakers and two as observers. While no student received an individual award, all the students did well – several missing final rounds by one rank!  Particular congratulations to Anne Arezina in HI. Mike Roos in prose, and Caitlin Powell in OO – all of whom just missed the final rounds!  Cailtin Clouse and Zoe Goettel made their congress debuts, Kevin Cottington competed at his first trophy tournament in prose (and picked up a rank of 1 – excellent for a novice!), Hillary Cerra competed in prose and picked up the points to advance her NFL degree to that of “excellence.”  Tom Eck debated in LD, Adam Mahood spoke in extemp, and Jo Ann McLaughlin and Kaitlyn Roos competed in duo.  Stephanie Kuntz and Ally Scalo observed Public Forum debate. Not the best of days, but not a bad day for a team that is really just starting official competition.

Apologies for the break in information… computers aren’t always there when you need them!

2004 -2005

Six students from NC competed at the PHSSL state tournament on the weekend of April 22 -23. Mike Roos and Jo Ann McLaughlin spoke in prose and radio announcing, while Tom Eck competed in congress. Tom was elected to the post of clerk of the second session of congress, and was called on to read the congress resolution to the final assembly. The debate team of Angelina Montelongo and Jenifer Boehm finished with a 2-2 record, and a 12th place overall ranking. Anne Arezina spoke through semifinal rounds, finishing 7th in the state.

The freshman-sophomore tournament found three new faces competing with the NC team!  Rick Tillilie made his debut in LD debate, finishing with a 2-2 record!  Not bad, considering that he had never seen a debate before his first round on Saturday!  And Kaity P tried poetry… enough to get her started in forensics, even if it will not be her event next year.  Nick N from Holy Sepulchre joined the team for one day – just to get a taste of high school competition. The other “regulars” included Greg Lenns in impromptu, Jo Ann McLaughlin and Mike Roos in prose, and Anne Arezina in HI. Student judges and coaches were Casey Harvey, Kaitlyn Roos and Jen Boehm.  Congratulations to all for ending the year on an upbeat note!

NC sent a healthy contingent to NFL qualifiers… and many of them did quite well. Kaitlyn Roos and JoAnn McLaughlin made it to semifinals in duo interp; Mike Roos made it to finals in HI; Tom Eck finished among the top ten LD debaters in western PA; and the CX team of Angelina Montelongo finished 5th.  Just as impressive as these performances – maybe more so – are the actions of several team members who worked for the overall good of the district.  MANY THANKS to Kaitlyn Roos and Anne Arezina who double entered in oratory so that the district could qualify an additional student in oratory. Then Katie Lenns teamed up with Zoe Goettel so that she could compete in PF. And Hillary Cerra and Casey Harvey worked at NC when we hosted the second day of debate. Casey was there from 8:00 until 3:00… playing hostess to all of the judges who attended that day.  Other coaches were most impressed at how selfless our team members are!  But we knew that all along! I am proud to be called their coach!

Eleven students competed at the speech and debate qualifier for the Grand National Tournament to be held in Milwaukee WI over the Memorial Day weekend. Mike Roos and Matt Harvey each advanced to a semifinal round in oral interpretation of literature, with Matt advancing to the final round and finishing 7th.  The duo teams of Greg Lenns and Katie Lenns, and Kaitlyn Roos and Jo Ann McLaughlin competed with Kaitlyn and Jo Ann finishing 3rd and qualifying for nationals. Adam Mahood and Casey Harvey competed in original oratory, with Casey finishing 2nd and qualifying for nationals. Tom Eck ended the day with a 2-2 record in Lincoln Douglas debate, while the policy team of Angelina Montelongo and Jenifer Boehm finished 1st overall.  Tom Eck and Jen Boehm also competed in congress competition on Sunday.

Fourteen students took part in the state qualifier tournament at Pine Richland on February 26, 2005. Tom Eck finished 1-3 in LD, Caitlin Clouse and Zoe Goettel finished 2-2 in Public Forum, and Angelina Montelongo and Jen Boehm finished 2-0 and in 1st place as district champions. Bridget Hanna competed in poetry, Hillary Cerra in prose and the team of Greg Lenns and Katie Lenns in duo. Casey Harvey finished as the 2nd alternate in persuasive speaking; Anne Arezina as the 1st alternate in humorous interp, and the team of Kaitlin Roos and Jo Ann McLaughlin as the first alternate in duo. Mike Roos finished in 2nd place overall in prose, and advances to state competition in April. Congratulations to all for a most impressive showing!

In one of the biggest showings of the forensic team this year, NC sent 18 of its 36 members to the 31st North Hills tournament. Angelina Montelongo and Jenifer Boehm competed in policy debate; Tom Eck, who competed in LD, went to quarter finals; Caitlin Clouse and Caitlin Docherty, who competed in Public Forum, went to quarter finals; Adam Mahood, Casey Harvey and Robyn Marshall competed in original oratory; Bridget Hanna competed in poetry; Catherine Lenns, Greg Lenns, JoAnn McLaughlin and Kaitlyn Roos competed in duo interp; Mike Roos, Hillary Cerra, Sarah Vinski and Matt Harvey competed in prose, with Matt advancing to semifinal rounds; and Anne Arezina competed in humorous interp and advanced to semifinals. A great way to end the regular season of competition!

Bridget picked up her NFL membership and Adam won 5th place in OO.  Special guest judges were Bill Eck and Ian McMeans.  A nice end to January competition!

Despite the snow, four North Catholic forensic students managed to get to the Pine Richland competition – and all did well enough to make the trip worthwhile!  Congratulations to Casey Harvey who took 8th in Original Oratory, to Tom Eck who took 5th in Lincoln Douglas Debate, to Matt Harvey who took 6th in prose reading and to Mike Roos who took 4th in prose reading. Great job to all!  Keep up the good work next week at Mercer!
